89 Days of Greatness: Day #24

June 16, 2014

Day #24 of 89 Days of Greatness.  It's not just a picnic.  It's not just a playground.  It's Picnic At The Playground.  OK.  I've taken the kids to the playground before.  Often.  And I've taken the kids on picnics before.  Not so often.  But this is the first time in, say, a presidential election cycle, that I've gotten my act together enough --- wait for it --- to do both at the same time.  This is such an unusual experience for them that I half expected them to dance the fool in the proverbial end zone, but instead they played...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #23

June 15, 2014

Day #23 of 89 Days of Greatness. They say a picture's worth a thousand words, and if so, these pictures begin to tell about the greatness of today. Greatness is loving a daddy enough to want to do a special surprise for him. Greatness is turning our kitchen into 'Cafe Mimosa' - or was it 'Mimosa Cafe?! - with fresh food and the littles helping with the surprise while Brian read the paper for an hour. Greatness is a five-year-old boy pretending to be a wine steward, offering a Coke from McDonald's as Daddy's 'wine.'     Greatness is a seven-year-old boy making fruit kebobs ...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #22

June 14, 2014

Day #22 of 89 Days of Greatness.  What was today's greatness?  Was it the mother-son date Brent and I had this afternoon to play miniature golf?  It's a rare thing - not lightning-strike rare, but grand-slam rare - for me to get one-on-one time with each of the littles. Last Saturday on my birthday, Mariana and I went and got our nails done for a Mama-daughter outing.  She convinced me to put a smoky blue-grey polish on my toes; it's still there, looking pretty smashing.  I think it's growing on me.  (Now that it is, it will immediately start wearing off....

89 Days of Greatness: Days #20 & 21

June 13, 2014

Days #20 and 21 of 89 Days of Greatness.  Between yesterday and today, I pick today.  But of course, that's not comparing apples to apples; it's comparing apples to, say, strychnine Yesterday, we were a little off.  And by 'off,' I mean that we were in a galaxy far, far away from the one where we wanted to be.  (This is especially bad if, like me, you are not well-versed in All Things Trekkie.)  Most of the day, my spirit felt like - and the littles' behavior looked like - the mess in the next three pictures.     Perhaps not coincidentally, those are pictures...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #19

June 11, 2014

Day #19 of 89 Days of Greatness.  It was a Multi-tasker's Dream Event:  do something physically challenging in the gross-motor skill arena while doing something requiring finesse in the fine-motor skill arena while doing something verbal. I wrote five instructions to fold up and put in each of three jars:  one for the gross motor challenge, one for the fine motor, and one for the verbal.  The idea was not that the instructions would be extraordinarily difficult; it was that I could imagine that any combination of three would be enough of a challenge to make it entertaining and a springboard...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #18

June 10, 2014

Day #18 of 89 Days of Greatness.  We were sitting down to do our greatness activity when we had the most wonderful surprise:  the doorbell rang, and it was a nice 22-year-old man who lived in our house years ago from when he was 8 to when he was 12.  (Brian had met him the other night when he first stopped by to reminisce, but we were putting the littles to bed and gave him a rain check.) He had graduated from college and is going to do two years with Teach for America in Chicago; he leaves for Chicago tomorrow.  He...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #17

June 9, 2014

Day #17 of 89 Days of Greatness. Today, we made ornaments. It’s not even Christmas in July; it’s Christmas in June, I guess.  And just a little bit of heaven on earth. Before I tell you how we pulled this off, let me assure you that this is not a talent-heavy activity.  I can do it, and I can't draw a convincing stick figure with a ruler.  (The littles still remind me of the time when I earnestly tried to draw a cat for one of them and it came out looking like a warped, deranged turtle.)  When I 'paint,' it...

89 Days of Greatness: Days 15 & 16

June 8, 2014

Days 15 and 16 of 89 Days of Greatness.  Yesterday was my birthday - so incredibly great to turn 27 again - and I couldn't post about the greatness of the day.  So for the first time ever, I'm posting about two days of greatness in the same post.  (Thanks for understanding, y'all.) Yesterday, the littles all slept. past. 7. A.M.  It was miraculous and beautiful.  I got up and worked out - my version of morning coffee - and around the time I went downstairs after exercising, the kiddos were up and going.  (Brian had already gone out to buy...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #14

June 6, 2014

Day #14 of 89 Days of Greatness.  Today marks a deviation from the norm on our 89 Days of Greatness summer series because today is a day that brought about a sea change in world history 70 years ago, and that deserves our attention. Had Hitler and the other evil architects of the Axis Powers had their way, America likely would not exist any longer as we know it, which means I likely wouldn't be doing everything every day that I get to do; neither would you. We owe the WWII vets and their families as well as all the allied...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #13

June 5, 2014

Day #13 of 89 Days of Greatness.  Let me first say that we are hosting an event for twenty folks from Brian's work tonight.  Let me next say that, as clean as we work to keep our house, it doesn't exactly live company-ready.  If Southern Living or Traditional Home or even Ray's Spare Auto Parts Guide magazine wanted to photograph our house, we'd welcome them to come.  With 139 days' notice for us to get everything clean enough.  There might be just a few more things for me to do before our guests descend upon us in two and a half hours.  Just a few. So...
