Days of Greatness: July 4th Weekend at the Lake (a.k.a. Bliss)

July 9, 2014

Days of Greatness.  What numbers are these?  I have absolutely no idea.  All I know is that the only number we were focused on around here was the 4th. We loaded into the car.  Two adults, three kids, two (large) dogs, and enough food and luggage for a small army to survive for up to six months in the outback.  (The open land, not the restaurant.)   Two and a half hours after loading up, we arrived at one of our happy places.  With the Texas drought in full force and some secondary water problems caused by it, the lake where my family...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #41

July 3, 2014

Day #41 of 89 Days of Greatness.  An individual medley race and a surprise swim. The littles had no idea what we were doing.  We were in between activities / appointments and had only about 45-50 minutes to spare.  I told them that we were doing our day of greatness activity and they had one job:  go find something that (a) weighs more than a pair of their shoes (b) less than our tub of cat food. You can imagine the twinkle and questions in their eyes as they thought of what they might get.  I could practically see the wheels turning as...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #40

July 2, 2014

Day #40 of 89 Days of Greatness.  I'm protesting.  There is no way that we can be that close to the half-way point of summer.  Denial will be my official summer companion from now until the first day of school. Brent would say that the day of greatness activity today was his outing with some buddies from church and a couple of the youth leaders there to Legoland.  (Not the one in San Diego - that'd be a bit far for the afternoon - but the one in Grapevine, which is a suburb of Dallas.)  He was so excited upon his...

Happy 15th, Handsome!

June 26, 2014

My Dear Brian, Fifteen years ago today, you were waiting for me.  I can still see you in my mind's eye, there at the front of the church, gasping to catch your breath and to steady the stream of happy tears when the doors of the church opened and Daddy started walking me down the aisle to you.  You had proposed just five and a half months before, and we had only dated nine months before that ...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #33

June 25, 2014

Day #33.  I had plans for our Day of Greatness activity, but as we all well know, plans are those things that hold until some other part of life comes along and re-writes our day. The boys' flag football camp was canceled this week after the first day because the rain-soaked fields evidently couldn't handle yet another day of 25 pairs of feet trampling through and making a mockery of what was left of the grass.  So the boys and I have been having fun in the mornings doing great things together - miniature golf yesterday morning! - while Mariana has...

89 Days of Greatness: Days #29 … and 30 … and 31 … and 32 [oops!]

June 24, 2014

So I kinda sorta maybe somewhat forgot to take pictures of our Days of Greatness activities from the last few days in much the same way that my Rangers have kinda sorta maybe somewhat forgotten how to score runs.  (We are currently losing to the Tigers 5-0, but with two men on in scoring position, I have a feeling that score will soon be worse.  Much worse.) Day #29 - we spent the day cooking and cleaning and generally preparing for one of our favorite families to come over for some swim time and a big meal.  We had a ball,...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #28

June 20, 2014

Day #28 of 89 Days of Greatness.  We had a little cousin time, a little shoe-buying time, a little - OK, a lot of) chore time, a little swim time, a little dinner time, a little post-dinner walk time.  Such a great summer day.  And that doesn't even cover the Day of Greatness activity. Of course, we also had the flip side.  (I knew it was coming sometime soon since we're almost a month into summer.)  Somewhere in the middle of the day, we had some "Holy cow!  Help me!  Someone has removed my children's typically stellar personalities and replaced them...

89 Days of Greatness: Days #26 & 27

June 19, 2014

Days #27 (yesterday) and #28 (today).  These could be two of my top five favorite Days of Greatness so far this summer.  I would have posted about yesterday's, well, yesterday, but I had to get a new computer and all the data was being transferred.  (Seemed like a good idea to have the people who actually work with computers do the data transfer rather than do it myself, by the end of which, I'd have two non-functioning computers instead of one.) Yesterday's Day of Greatness activity was all about creativity.  I wrote out each of their first names on paper and...

89 Days of Greatness: Day #25

June 17, 2014

Day #25 of greatness.  I had a plan for it, but plans are only there in case other things don't come up, and today, other things came up.  Fortunately, today's other things were the ingredients in a recipe for a dreamy summer day. A couple of my cousin's kids ended up free for the afternoon, and she said it would help her out some if they could come over here while she worked to get her house ready to sell.     The littles had academic camps in the morning, and then after lunch we had those two cousins come over for a swim...
