89 Days of Greatness: Day #8

[To see what 89 Days of Greatness is all about - and to see that I really do have an awesome graphic for it; I just have to wait to use it until my graphics guy returns from vacation - read here. In case you are too distracted by (a) the fact that yet another month is about to roll off the calendar and holy cow where is this year going?! (b) the dirty dishes in the kitchen sink just waiting to be either washed or simply pulverized, I'll sum it up by saying that 89 Days of Greatness is...

If we simply must name a culprit, we'd have to point to hip replacement surgery. It's a stretch, but I think I could make the case for it. Yes, hip replacement surgery is to blame credit for the absolute greatness of the five of us gathering in front of Brian's iPad, watching one of the greatest episodes in TV history that originally aired about 30 or so years ago. Last week, Momma had hip replacement surgery. The surgeon was great, and Momma was a superstar despite a pretty nasty post-op complication. She's doing super now. But I knew that with her...

O.K.  So here is where you have to imagine a fantastic graphic on top of the cool photo above.  It's been designed by a super-talented graphics designer.  It's even sitting on my computer.  In three different formats.  I just can't access it.  When I go to open it in any of the three different formats the designer used to send it to me, I get this utterly worthless 'convert file from:' box with a list of options, all of which might as well be written and offered in Swahili. So when my graphics guy gets back in town from his family...

Happy Birthday, Brent!

Today you are seven. Seven years ago this morning, you let me know that you were ready to be born.  It didn't matter to you that the doctor didn't think that you were coming for twelve or fourteen days. You had decided that you were ready, and so you started your way into the world.  That was fantastic, and my body tried to help you in some ways.  But in other ways, my body wasn't cooperating.  When my doctor noticed what was happening and the serious risks involved, it took him about two seconds to say, "We've got a healthy baby...

Peanuts at the Ballpark

First-grade boys baseball is a lesson in math, physics, and anatomy. How many boys does it take to field a grounder and get the ball from the left side of the infield to the right? Why is it that sometimes the answer to that question is ‘one,’ and other times it’s ‘seven’? Why can a first-grader’s hand sometimes grab the entire ball in one scoop and other times seem to have come in contact with a large tub of Crisco, making it impossible to hold said ball in said hand for more than three nanoseconds? It’s also a lesson in the...
